Here’s the scoop, and follow along if you can. No doubt you remember the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, better known as the 2009 stimulus bill. One of the programs established in that bill was a $230 million fund for obesity prevention grants, given to over two dozen states. Now, here is the crazy part. Some of that money has been used to lobby local governments to encourage the passage of sugar and soda taxes.
So, your money, in the form of taxpayer dollars, was given to state governments, and some of that money went to lobby local governments to push for taxes that would support the federal, state and local governments. Got that? It’s a giant Ponzi scheme!
I am on record as to why I oppose soda taxes. Regardless of where you stand on that issue, I hope you agree that a government that gives money to itself in order to lobby itself to pass laws to give more money to itself is pretty ridiculous.
